We discovered a type of Mytilus mussel species, commonly known as gallo provincialis, “Mediterranean Mussels,” or “Gallo Mussels,” when diving in a bay near Saltspring Island in 1996. These mussels had never been found in British Columbian waters before. Our hatchery is unique in that it produces its own seed, whereas practically all mussel farms obtain seed from the wild. The only dedicated commercial mussel hatchery in the world is Island Sea Farms. Saltspring Island Mussels are “Ocean Wise” recognised by the Vancouver Aquarium. Environmental organisations such as the Audubon Society, the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch, and Edo-Fish support mussel farming.
